Pink & Gray Floral Nursery

Baby· Motherhood· Our Home

30 Nov

It’s hard to believe I’m sharing another nursery with you guys. We’ve had a busy last few months since we moved into a new home over the summer and are welcoming our baby girl right before Christmas. It seems like just yesterday we were decorating Layla’s nursery, even though it was 2 years ago now. We’re expecting our little Gabriella in 3 weeks, so let’s just say we finished this nursery just in time! Being pregnant with a toddler is no joke, it’s hard for me to get anything done now-a-days. When I was pregnant with Layla, I think we had the nursery done around 20-25 weeks. First kid problems, haha. Even though Gabby wont be sleeping in here for quite a few months, it feels good to have it complete and I’m in love with how it came out.

It’s simple, elegant, yet sweet and girly. I am super thankful we were able to collaborate with some great companies, including buybuy BABY to furnish this room. We love buybuy BABY because it’s a great one stop shop for all your baby needs. I will link everything I can at the end of the post for you! Also, keep your eyes peeled for a few coupon codes too. I feel as though every detail came out perfectly. As I normally do when I design a room, I start out by creating a design board on powerpoint or canva. I screenshot items that I like and paste them to see what they would look like together. I don’t get fancy with it, but it gives me an idea of the room as a whole.

When I originally started designing the room, I intended on doing one wall with a floral wallpaper. Then, I came across this decal from Rocky Mountain Decals and fell in love. It’s not too overpowering and I like that I was able to position the flowers the way I want! It’s perfect around Gabriella’s name sign from our favorite wood shop, Mod Wood Co. Rocky Mountain is offering my readers 15% off with code “SARAHJEAN15” if you’re in the market for a decal or wallpaper! We’re also using the same baby monitor, the lollipop camera (linked at the bottom of post), which is great because it streams right to our phones and we’ll be able to see both of the girls at the same time.

We first worked with Newton Baby for Layla’s crib mattress and I was literally blown away when I received it in person. You can put your face right up to this mattress and actually breathe into it. Talk about worrying less as a mama when your baby is sleeping! So, I knew we wanted one for Gabby’s room and now they have colored mattresses and there’s no need for a crib sheet. You can also put this mattress into the wash if you need to. They are offering you guys $50 off a mattress until 12/31/19 with the code “sarahmelito”.

All of the furniture is from buybuy BABY, including the rug and the mirror above the dresser. I thrifted the nightstand table and painted it for when we used it in Lay’s room. I was pretty shocked when I was searching for furnishings and found cute rugs and home decor while on buybuy BABY’s website though. I didn’t know they had so many options available to decorate a room! You guys have to check them out if you’re looking to design a nursery or kid’s room.

Do you think Layla is ready to become a big sister? I’d say so! She carries around her baby dolls everywhere and even has a small baby carrier to wear them in. Two under two should be interesting. Can’t wait to share all about this new journey with you guys.

much love,

Buying grains in bulk and milling my own flour at Buying grains in bulk and milling my own flour at home has been such a blessing and game changer in my kitchen as a homemaker! It provides us with more nutritious baked goods and it’s a great way to be self-sustainable. It does take a lot of learning to convert recipes to whole wheat, but it can be done! I buy my wheat berries and grain from @azurestandard (check out the link in my bio for their site) and I store them in 5-gallon buckets with gamma lids. Do you have any questions on home-milled flour?! Comment “grain mill” for the link to the mill I use and love!

Do you want a garden that is low maintenance, requ Do you want a garden that is low maintenance, requires little weeding, supports pollinators & the earth, and thrives on it’s own? Then consider permaculture for abundant and beautiful gardens this year! It’s very easy to set up this kind of garden and no heavy machinery or disrupting the earth is required. This can be done to fill up your raised beds too!
Simply follow these steps:
1. Layer cardboard, paper bags from the grocery store, or brown contractor paper
2. Soak it with a hose and get it nice and wet
3. Layer on hay, straw, leaves, dead grass, sticks, animal bedding (not hot) or pine needles
4. Top with a thick layer of compost.
5. I add more water to really let it set in. It will be ready to plant in just a few weeks! When you do plant, it’s important to add a thick layer of natural mulch to also keep feeding the soil, cutting back weeds & requiring less watering.

I had such great success with this method last year, that I decided to add another row this year and implement more permaculture techniques throughout my garden.

What questions do you have about permaculture gardening?!
For so many years I bought broth at the store (I s For so many years I bought broth at the store (I still do buy some to keep in the pantry) but for the most part, learning to make my own broth has been such a game-changer for taste, flavor & less waste! I do mine in the insta-pot to set it and forget it, but you can use the stove-top or crock pot method too.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Use about 2lbs of bones you have leftover, from ribs and drumsticks to whole chickens, all bones can be saved. I also make sure to get all the bones when we order our whole cow. I’ve even used chicken feet after helping a friend butcher chickens for a day, they were free for the taking!
2. Add any veggie scraps if you have them. I save carrot peels, onion peels, leek tops, the little bits of celery you don’t usually use. I forage mushrooms and freeze them for broth too. All of that can be added. If you don’t have any saved, just add carrots, onions (or leeks) and some celery.
3. Add 2 cinnamon sticks, peppercorns, any herbs you like and a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to pull out the gelatin of the bones.
4. Fill up to the max fill line with water, set to 3 hours and then let naturally release. Sometimes I let it sit for 24 hours without opening to really let the flavor develop and get it very gelatinous.
5. Strain off and use within 1 week. Or you can freeze it very easily, making sure to leave a little room for head space since it can expand in the freezer.

Have you ever made your own broth?! I swear it’s not intimidating as it sounds and anyone can do it!
